 Metabolic Retinology

A New Science of Exceptional Relevance to Public Health

"Described by Jeff Rense in his radio interview with

Dr Owen Fonorow as the greatest advance in cardiology

of our lifetime!"

Resulting from the 1999 discovery and development

 of the disciplines  of

 Nutritional Preventive & Therapeutic

comprising the new field of research and practise for Optometrists

this being established by the surprising, total refusal of Official Medicine in the

UK to show any interest whatever in nutritional reversal of arterial disease except to threaten and deny a NHS contract to the author who refused to accept that he must

stop advising NHS patients that arterial disease is reversible.  Dr. Bush then denounced

the UK NHS as corrupt on BBC Radio as published in the Epoch Times.

Introduction and History.

Nutritional Preventive & Therapeutic CardioRetinometry® . . .

is the study of retinal and particularly retinal microvascular changes in response to dietary, medical, intrauterine, senescent, supplementary nutritional and other inputs and challenges to the observed fundus oculi. These represent like coronary artery and other target organ vascular changes being surrogate outcome predictors.

The science of Metabolic Retinology came to prominence as a result of  the discovery of a repeatable, predictable arterial change in patients who either supplemented with vitamin C or adopted significant lifestyle and /or dietary modifications. Realisation that a new science might have emerged was greeted with both controlled scepticism and hard to suppress elation so soon after the Fleischman Pons debacle. With that freshly in mind, care was taken to provide no opportunity for subsequent criticism by inspecting colleagues. The ever present wish was that the newly named Nutritional Preventive and Therapeutic CardioRetinometry®,  might reveal an entirely new area of wide ranging research. By December 2002 it was decided to announce the new name. From the Autumn of 1999, initially only medical patients were apprised of the development. Visiting every six months for their own contact lens after care, they were quickly supportive, surprising Bush by immediately linking the changes with life extension.   All this followed from the detection of arterial and venous changes when researching ‘nasal shift’ of the central artery and vein of the retina in the quest for an earlier diagnostic of glaucoma. The original research objective was to pre-empt the irreversible visual field loss that is a positive determinator of glaucoma and pathognomonic in low tension cases, of primary open angle glaucoma.

At the time of writing (7th September 2010) the fact of retinal arterial disease reversal by vitamins and amino acids, was unreported in the archive of the National Institutes of Health, National Library of Medicine for 55 years. Eventually, in our efforts to eliminate all possibility of prior art, repeated searches benefiting from the slow backwards extension of the database to include ever more historic papers from before 1960,  yielded two papers in 2008 dating from 1958 and 1954. Whilst relating to vascular and retinopathy changes in diabetes, these papers were unlike current work in that no supplementation or medication was involved; only dietary exclusion involving a Spartan rice diet. Nevertheless they must be reported here. as they described vascular and diabetic retinopathy improvements. This is the opposite of a Nutritional Preventive CardioRetinometry protocol except insofar as one approach in CardioRetinometry® is the exclusion of modern polyunsaturated oils and excess alcohol, due to free radicals, unknown in March 1954 and very little known in 1958, due to Harman’s publishing in journals of gerontology.

With the exception of letters specifying the discovery published by Sydney Bush in the British Medical Journal on 23rd July and 26th November 2004 in "Rapid Responses to Wong" therefore, nutrient supplementation initiated retinal changes are completely absent from the archive, a gross omission that must be remedied.

The reason why there is no mention in the Archive of  this development appears to be editorial concerns for the impact of this breakthrough on the viability of other titles published by their employers and the generally adverse impact to be expected on medical incomes with the elimination of up to 100 Free Radical Diseases. The many journals that are vulnerable are notably, "Circulation," "Atherosclerosis," "American Journal of Cardiology," "American Heart Journal,"  "Advances in chronic kidney disease,"  "CVD Prevention and Control," "Journal of Infection,"  and "J. of the Am. Socy. of Hypertension." The fears of editors is strongly suspected because of information gleaned in conversations with editors "off the rewcord." The original paper with 220 citations, written by Bush was rewritten in collaboration with another colleague and was intended to fully describe the new science. Its further objective was to demonstrate its efficacy in reversing arterial disease with before and after images. In this way it was planned to reveal the new science and demonstrate its anticipated potential to change preventive medicine introducing the concept of life extension optometry. Prof Richer had earlier assisted  in the launch and recognition of this new field of Ophthalmology and Optometry in his UK lectures.

That paper, despite bringing entirely new knowledge to the profession was unexpectedly rejected for publication by the peer reviewed Journal of the American Academy of Optometry. One of the objections raised by the peer reviewers was "some of the citations are old." Nor was the editor happy with the mentions of vitamin C. Bush considered this to be frank political suppression as had been admitted to by another journal editor. The knowledge contained in this suppressed paper is so unique that without its publication, no colleague or Ophthalmologist can be expected to fully understand and interpret the optic disc. That is the experience of Bush in detailed consultations with Optometrists and Ophthalmologists who are compelled to confirm that the principles of three dimensional disc interpretation in two dimensions are new.

The remainder of the peer reviewed archive is now seen to be corrupted by editorial and research funding bias. Corruption of the archive is also seen in the suppression of the term ‘scurvy’ in favour of ‘vitamin C deficiency,’ spectacularly changed after 1958. The logical reasons for all the forgoing are that the public will automatically elect for a non-surgical reversal of heart disease monitored via the retinal arteries and veins as perfect surrogate outcome indicators of the atheroma in the coronary arteries, and not be alarmed by ‘vitamin C deficiency’ compared with ‘scurvy.’ The annual loss to medicine and pharmacy of bypass  sales might exceed $50 Billion.

Nine months after Bush stated in the BMJ  that there was no evidence for any relationship between plasma cholesterol and retinal atherosclerosis, T.Y. Wong wrote to confirm this in August 2005. Until the peer reviewed journals relax their censorship of this subject, there will remain no mention in the medical archive of the beneficial arterial changes that have now been recorded persisting in hundreds of contact lens patients since as early as April 1998 when digital electronic retinal imaging started. Many of these people have gained  13 years of cardiovascular life extension and confidently expect the renovated arteries to remain  healthy in 2011 having seen them improving steadily since 1998.

News of the the new field of Orthomolecular,  Optometric study was first reported by CBN TV in Spring 2005 and by Prof. Steve Hickey and Dr. Hilary Roberts PhD in their book Ridiculous Dietary Allowance – An Open Challenge To The RDA for vitamin C. 2004 (Chapter "Quantifiable biomarkers for scurvy." (Pages 107-111) ISBN 1- 4116-2221-9.  Dr. Owen Fonorow followed in Nexus Magazine Dec 2005/Jan 2006  and his book "Practicing Medicine Without A Licence." (USA)  2008 Ch.3 Pp. 46-49. ISBN 978-1-4357-1293-5.
The inclusion of conditions in the above list e.g. rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and both wet and dry macular degeneration as being included in metabolic retinology may surprise practitioners but they are invited to consider that long lived animals have not been seen to suffer a like condition, without the benefit of sunglasses worn in their continuous exposure to sunlight. As deficiency diseases of humans, their origin in scurvy or related/similar deficiencies seems quite reasonable. The retinal detachment connection is through scorbutic tortuosity  resulting in retinal torsion, folds, traction  and finally tearing  as also evidenced photographically with reversal documented after nutritional supplementation.

After about 8 yrs of evidence gathering and the acquisition of 12 years of  ‘Before and After’ photographic recording of arterial disease reversals, patients started asking if they could write an appreciation. In a tightly scheduled contact lens clinic the best that could be done was to provide  sheets for people to read the comments of others and add their own.

After 200 written testimonials had been received to the reversal of retinal arterial atherosclerosis by contact lens patients. the list was closed. Because every medical patient equated the reversal of arterial disease with life extension, the phrase was included in the heading to the testimonials for people to read and consider before offering their own.

100 of 200 Written Testimonials to Nutritional Preventive CardioRetinometry®:
All the testimonials (from all over the UK) have been written under the general heading

“Dear Dr. Bush, Thank you for showing me the improvement in my arteries. I am sure the reductions of cholesterol demonstrated have given me life extension and am happy to sign with my name and address granting freedom for others to contact me to verify the truth of this statement and releasing copyright on my images.” (Patients who want to sign a testimonial are asked not to mention vitamin C unless they are sure it is relevant.)

1.  “Thank you so much for the last ten years. I have enjoyed your pleasant nature and wonderful insight!. The power of vitamin C – Magic. Well worth the trip over to Hull – wouldn’t change a thing (Smiley face) Thank you Dr. Bush. C . Knaresborough. N. Yorkshire”             ( 120 miles  3 hrs round trip – SJB)

 102.             Miss E.P. (9 yrs of age at start. after 1 yr she wrote I think Vit. C. has improved my eyes. (which was also signed by her mother.) Nothing else had changed in the child’s diet. Unfortunately the following year the mother did not give her the promised one gram every day and the arteries regressed very badly, almost to the original condition.
